Occupying a prominent beachfront site adjacent to the Moffat Beach café strip and parklands, Moffat Beach House responds to one of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic coastal settings with a bold yet refined architectural presence.

The design embraces its highly visible location, presenting a strong architectural form that both acknowledges and enhances the character of the beachfront streetscape. A carefully composed arrangement of vertical blades, horizontal battening and a striking 7.5-metre-long sun hood provides privacy, sun control and weather protection, while contributing to a layered, contemporary aesthetic that is distinctly coastal.

The building’s form is anchored by a generous gable roof spanning the full width of the site. Glazing at both ends of the gable draws in abundant natural light, creating a bright, airy interior that feels open to its surroundings. This sense of warmth and calm is reinforced through the use of natural material palettes, including exposed timber rafters and recycled hardwood ceiling linings, whose tones and textures bring depth and tactility to the spaces within.

At night, the architectural form is softly transformed through carefully considered uplighting. The illuminated gable and timber elements give the home a warm, lantern-like presence, enhancing both the dwelling and the streetscape after dark.

Functionally, the home has been planned to prioritise amenity, outlook and engagement with its beachfront setting. The garage is discreetly located to the rear of the site via a side driveway, allowing the front of the house to open to the street and landscape. This strategy creates a north-facing front yard and lower-level rumpus oriented directly towards the beach, maximising views, sunlight and connection to the coastal environment. By pulling the garage back from the street, the house aligns with and reinforces the pedestrian-friendly nature of the neighbourhood, contributing positively to the public realm.

Moffat Beach House is a considered response to place — balancing bold architectural expression with climatic performance, material warmth and a strong connection to coastal life.
